These avocados are not only energy and protein rich but the minerals, oils and vitamins they contain are vital for optimum functioning of the nervous system, skin and bone health, as well as the heart and circulation.
Avocados contain NO cholesterol or solid fat, the wrong type of fat that leads to the hardening of the arteries. In fact they are an exceptionally good source of mono-unsaturates, a type of fat that helps lower LDL (bad cholesterol).
In one study those who ate a diet high in avocados had significant reductions in total and LDL cholesterol and an 11% increase in good cholesterol after just one week.
Recent studies have also found avocados to be a good source of lutein, which protects against eye disease such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
Lutein in avocados may also help lower the risk of prostate cancer. Avocados naturally contain several cancer fighting substances including the powerful antioxidant vitamin E and the plant compound glutathione.
Research also shows that when lutein and lycopene (found aplenty in tomatoes, also one of the 10 superfoods) are combined, protection against prostate cancer is even greater.
